Seminários de Astronomia: The lord of the winds: a black hole to rule them all – Daniel May (LNA/MCTIC)

In the realm of galaxies, the active galactic nuclei (AGN) have prevented us from living in a kind of super-giant galaxy, and the central supermassive black hole (SMBH) is the protagonist in this scenario, regulating the growth of their host galaxies. Such process takes place through the interaction between the energy released by an accretion disc and the nuclear gas, which may come in two flavours: winds and jets, or simply outflow. Present in 2/3 of the galaxies with bulge, this activity is still shrouded by mysteries: where these winds are formed and how they are able to blow out the gas to hundreds of parsecs from the nucleus? Here, we propose an additional process to solve this puzzle in the canonical galaxy NGC 1068, called “secondary wind”. At this stage, the huge amount of concentrated kinetic energy in the jet is re-distributed by means of a thermal wind, far away from the centre. We also strengthen the alliance between the next big size mirrors and the methodology to analyse data cubes.
