Título: “Silicate melt structure: A brief history, recent developments, and new insights into the crystallization process”
Abstract: Structure—property relationships in silicate glasses and melts have been pursued for several decades and have constantly found evidence of possible links. Unlike diffraction of crystals, however, silicate liquid structure requires multiple probes which rarely lead to a coherent conclusion. This talk gives a brief history of silicate melt structure and recent developments which led to the prospect of unifying some of the previous discrepancies. Surprisingly, some of these ideas are implicated as explanations in our initial results on the crystallization of barium disilicate (BaSi2O5) liquid into the isochemical phase sanbornite. The liquid structure of the BaO-SiO2 system is probed using Raman and NMR spectroscopies, and compared to molecular dynamic simulations to provide a robust structural model. Ultimately, this will provide a quantitative description of the crystallization process.
