The Giant Magellan Telescope Project: building and using a 23 meter telescope
Dia 10 de Março de 2020 às 16h
Anfiteatro Antônio Cabral
In 2012 the state of São Paulo, through FAPESP, became founding partner of the 1B USD Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), one of the largest astrophysical observatories currently under construction in the world. With a unique segmented mirror design, the GMT will have a collecting area equivalent to a 23 m diameter parabolic surface that together with an advanced adaptive optics system will deliver the diffraction-limited images and spectra needed for frontier science in astrophysics by the end of this decade. Optimized for observations at near-ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared wavelengths, the GMT provides a new window to fundamental scientific research of extra-solar planets, black holes and galactic systems near and far. In this seminar, I will present an overview of the construction project, the main scientific questions that GMT is meant to address, and the role of the wider Brazilian community in this extremely exciting but challenging project.
