Nanomembranes are freestanding nanostructures with mesoscopic thicknesses and lateral dimensions in the macroscopic range. By strain and stress engineering inside the nanomembranes, self-assembled three-dimensional (3D) structures, such as microtubes and micro-ribbons, can be formed. Since the patterning methods used for manufacturing the nanomembranes are the same ones employed in standard microfabrication processes, the creation of 3D devices based on microtubes and micro-ribbons is a typical case where bottom-up and top-down methods are combined to give rise to novel technologies. The deterministic formation of self-rolled microtubes has been used to create a series of functional devices including capacitors, transistors, sensors, and complexes heterojunctions. In this seminar, the processes of fabrication and the electrical characterization of nanomembrane-based hybrid organic/inorganic structures will be presented.
