editora Springer (Heidelberg) acaba de lançar o livro "Max Planck e a
Física Moderna". Trata-se de uma coletânea de artigos sobre a atuação
de Planck no desenvolvimento das muitas áreas da Física. O capítulo 5
sobre a Física de Sistemas Estocásticos foi escrito por mim. Springer has just released the book "Max Planck and Modern Physics", which brings articles from physicists and historians of science on Planck's role in the development of Modern Physics. Chapter 5 on Stochastic Systems is my contribution to this volume. |

revista Tópicos, da Sociedade Brasil-Alemanha traz um artigo meu, em
sua última edição, acerca do tempo, memória e irreversibilidade. The 3rd issue of Tópicos, the Journal of the Brazilian-German Society (Deutsch-Brasilianische Gesellschaft) has just been released. In the journal there is an article I wrote on the meaning of memory and the arrow of time. |

editora Wiley acaba de lançar (outubro 2008)
"Max Planck: Annalen Papers", uma
coletânea de trabalhos seminais de Planck nas mais diversas áreas em
que atuou. O livro
está subdividido em capítulos que tratam de linhas de trabalho
específicas, sendo que cada uma delas traz uma introdução onde a obra
de Planck é historicamente contextualizada. O capítulo 3, Statistical
Thermodynamics and Stochastic Theory, teve a introdução escrita por
mim. Este assunto será o tema de minha palestra no 72º
Encontro
Anual da Sociedade Alemã de Física (DPG) em fevereiro. Wiley has just released the book "Max Planck: Annalen Papers" (October 2008) with Planck's seminal papers on quantum theory, statistical thermodynamics, thermodynamics and radiation theory. Each chapter is devoted to one particular topic and is preceeded by an introduction where Planck's works are discussed in their historical context. I am responsible for the introduction to chapter 3 (Statistical Thermodynamics and Stochastic Theory). This will be the theme of my talk during the 72nd Annual Meeting of the German Physical Society (DPG) in February. |

Acaba
de chegar às bancas uma nova edição da revista Filosofia, Ciência &
Vida que traz um artigo meu a respeito do Tempo. Afinal, o que é o
tempo? Neste artigo, voltado para um público geral, trato da questão do
tempo na obra de físicos e filósofos, em particular dos trabalhos do
matemático Kurt Gödel em Teoria da Relatividade Geral acerca da
objetividade do tempo. A chamada para a reportagem pode ser vista no
canto
superior esquerdo da
capa. New
article (in Portuguese) on the meaning of
time. On the upper left of the cover one can read: What is time
actually? How Philosophy and
Physics confront the irreversibility of natural phenomena.
This article is based on a discussion of Gödel's solution of
Einstein' s
Equations (the so-called rotating universes) and closely related to an
article I wrote for undergraduates on rotating universes. I also dwell
upon the more philosophical questions related to human memory (PDF). |

coisas como, através da Filosofia, figuras geniais como Leibniz, Gödel
e Einstein mudaram nossa maneira de ver o mundo. Meu artigo é o título
de capa: Tecnologia para quê? My article (in Portuguese) on the relevance of Philosophy to Science & Technology was published in the October issue of the magazine Filosofia, Ciência & Vida. In this article I discuss mostly the works of Leibniz, Einstein and Gödel. The cover title reads: Technology for what? work I did in collaboration with Ana L.C. Bazzan, Alexandre Baraviera

presented during a workshop on (agent-based) modelling of financial
