1. The IUPAP International Conference on Women in Physics was held
in Paris, France, from March 7 to March 9, 2002. The main purpose of the
conference was to understand the severe under-representation of women
worldwide and to develop strategies to increase their participation in
physics. More information on the conference can be found by going to
http://www.if.ufrgs.br/%7Ebarbosa/conference.html
2. The Royal Society recently nominated Sir Roger Elliott (currently
chairman of the ICSU press) for Treasurer of the ICSU Executive board.
Sir Roger is currently the only person standing for Treasurer. We will
keep you updated about Sir Roger's nomination in future e-bulletins.
3. In parallel with the World Summit on Sustainable Development
(WSSD), the South African Government will be organising a Forum on
Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development.
The International Council for Science (ICSU), in cooperation with
the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the World Federation of
Engineering Organisations (WFEO) agreed to support the coordination of
this Forum. ICSU's role together with TWAS and WFEO will be to advise the
South African organisers on the scientific and technical merits of
meetings proposed to be part of the Forum as well as the coherence and
coordination of the Forum events. As a part of this Forum ICSU together
with TWAS and other partners will organize their own events concerned with
Science for Sustainable Development. More information on WSSD can be
found at http://www.johannesburgsummit.org/ or you can contact Dr Rachel
Quinn, Senior Manager Science Policy at the Royal Society
(rachel.quinn@royalsoc.ac.uk).
