Title:
Black Holes and Gravitational Waves - An Introductory Overview

Speaker:
Guilherme Gonçalves Ferrari

Abstract:
The LIGO detectors have observed for the first time the gravitational waves from the merger of two stellar-mass black-holes. In this talk we present some of the theoretical fundamentals which may help the audience to better understand the process of black-hole merger and the generation of gravitational waves. We begin by introducing the concept of a black-hole, the parameters describing these objects and the different types of black-holes that can exist in nature. After a brief discussion of the thermodynamics of black-holes we present the maximum amount in mass, that can be converted in energy carried away by gravitational waves. We discuss the dynamics of a pair of black-holes and the mechanism of gravitational wave radiation during the different stages of inspiral, merger and ringdown of the resulting single black-hole. We introduce the concept of Strain (the quantity describing the detected gravitational waveform) and conclude the talk by presenting some of the prospects in the field of Gravitational Wave Astronomy.
