EQUILIBRIUM AND OSCILLATIONS IN ULTRA-COLD MATTER: FROM BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATES TO RYDBERG PLASMAS

In recent years, three different phases of ultra-cold matter have been explored: i) the laser-cooled gas, ii) the Bose-Einstein condensate, and iii) the Rydberg plasma. In this talk, we discuss the equilibrium and elementary oscillation in these three phases, and discuss their similarities and differences.
At IST, a large magneto-optical trap experiment, based on laser-cooling techniques, is in operation since October 2014. A sphere of 10^10 atoms of Rubidium is confined and cooled down to 100 micro-kelvin.
We introduce some basic concepts of this field, such as the collective laser cooling forces and the atom effective charge, and describe the main results obtained at IST. This includes the study of collective processes in the neutral and plasma gas. Thomas-Fermi equilibrium of the ultra-cold plasma, similar to that usually defined for condensates, is shown to exist.
Finally, recent theoretical work on turbulent condensates is discussed. This includes modified Thomas-Fermi equilibrium, twisted phonons, envelope solitons and coupling between vortices.
