Resumo: Between 1902 and 1904 Einstein wrote three papers in which he established--independently of
Gibbs--equilibrium statistical physics in the form we understand it now. These papers are comparatively
little known, but are important on one hand because Einstein's path is more direct and satisfactory
than Gibbs', and on the other hand because they allow to understand how Einstein was led to the scientific
program tackled in his works on statistical physics in 1905, i.e., the photon and the Brownian motion papers.
I shall describe the papers, set them in context, and discuss the points in which we can catch a glimpse of
Einstein's further research path.
