Resumo:

In this colloquium I will briefly introduce the notion of entropy as it appears for systems in thermodynamic equilibrium.  I will argue that recent modifications of entropy from its standard Boltzmann-Gibbs form are unfounded.  Specifically, I will show that recent proposals of applying Tsallis entropy to inhomogeneous systems are not justified.  I will then present a simple theory based on statistical mechanics of inhomogeneous fluids which provides an excellent description of the particle distribution in a confining potential. For systems with long-range interactions in the thermodynamic limit,  I will argue that the notion of entropy is completely irrelevant, since these systems never relax to thermodynamic equilibrium  --- instead they become trapped in quasi stationary states (QSS), the life-time of which diverges with the number of particles.   I will then present a recently developed theory which allows us to a priori predict the density and the velocity distribution in these QSS.
